Expertise in the written word

As an expert in the written word, I can draft or edit copy for many different functions; these include books, newsletters, articles and reports, conference presentations, press releases, websites, blogs.

My experience is based on a blend of three skills: editorial proficiency, marketing expertise, commercial acumen.

I have over 40 years’ experience in roles that have involved using the written word. I spent many years in book and magazine publishing; I’ve also worked as a sales and marketing manager and as a business development manager in corporate environments; I’ve been a small business owner twice over; and my writing skills have been invaluable in the voluntary sector.

No ‘one size fits all’

All of these roles have involved writing copy tailored to specific audiences or markets, which is an important skill – there is no ‘one size fits all’! I always think about what the audience would like to hear, what makes them interested to carry on reading.

Being able to write to specific word counts or page lengths is just as important: this is about being able to encapsulate key points in a few sentences. I learned this through my experience in the voluntary sector, submitting multiple grant applications, which often feature word count limits.

Having rapport is vital

It’s really important to build rapport with clients, especially if I’m editing or proofreading a book or an article into which a lot of blood, sweat and tears have been invested. It has been a privilege to work with some really lovely people;  getting to know them has been crucial to getting the best outcomes.

If you have a book or an article you’d like to be the best that they can be, please contact me to discuss!

“Helen was extremely helpful in proofreading my work and correcting the grammar without changing the meaning of my sentences. When she had queries, she communicated with me via email. She took her work very seriously and did an excellent job. I look forward to working with her for my future writing. Thank you so much, Helen! I greatly appreciated working with you.”
